Metal Stamping: A Key Manufacturing Process

Metal stamping is a manufacturing process that involves forming thin, flat metal through the use of dies and punches to make specific shapes and designs. It is believed to be a precision process since the end-stamped parts can easily obtain a specific tolerance and uniformity in the production of the parts.

Metal stamping is applied in most sectors to make huge numbers of metal parts at relatively lower costs per part than other methods, such as CNC machining or casting. Some of the uses of steel sheets are in the automotive industry for uses such as in the manufacture of body panels, brackets, and gears; home appliances and electronics products, including computer casing and power tool enclosure; as well as in hardware and fixtures.

It is essential to have a thin layer of oil film between the two dies touching the metal to make clean parts, longer tool life, enhanced safety, and durability. Coils are lubricated in the stamping plants, and there is a possibility that robots may spray lubricant at the time of death. Staking also involves heating in some cases and, therefore, the use of water-based coolants to regulate the temperature of the workpiece. Machines, scrap pieces, and lubricant are reused within the system.

Secondary operations may also be carried out using various cells to trim, drill holes, tap threads, weld, paint, or plate the stamped parts before assembly. They quickly scan each part in an attempt to identify any flaws and then sort parts automatically.

Tool and die makers work on the stamping tools taken from tool steel or carbides that shape each part in its special form. The post-stamping presses, which are two, three, and four, utilize force in the operation of the dies. There are special rings to regulate the force distribution for improved part formation. Advanced servo motor actuation is less costly and offers more accuracy, faster, and more versatility as opposed to stick-type mechanical presses.

Experts in the industry are always coming up with new improvements in stamping operations. For instance, in progressive dies, several stations work with the parts, and each accomplishes several operations. Transfer die stamping feeds parts from one die set to another and helps in making some of the parts that are costly to make using relatively cheaper dies.
